Some say a ‘real’ business network is a connected system of people who are connected for a good reason, rather than a bunch of random connections. On the other hand our own research reveals that people love coming along to the Curry Club, even when they don’t always meet other people in their own sector or target market. In our experience networking success is more about enjoying the overall experience. If you hate being at a networking event, you won’t succeed no matter how many relevant people are there.
Every network is different, as is every attendee. You might focus on niche networks, closely concentrated on people in your exact sector or target market. Some networks are more about general socialising, just having a drink with like-minded people. Some are extremely formal. Others are informal and include a wide variety of business people from different sectors, like the Curry Club, where you’re at an advantage because you never know who other people know. We won’t make you stand up and pitch in public, so you get the chance to practise your networking skills in a less formal way. And people get to know you, the person behind the business, not just the business itself. Trying out several networks is the best way to pin down which you enjoy best.
